Evening of Remembrance in Chicago

An evening of remembrance and celebration in honor of John and his work will be held Monday evening, August 4, 2008 at Old St. Patrick's Church in Chicago.

The historic church is located on the corner of DesPlaines and Adams Streets in downtown Chicago. The evening will begin at 6:30 PM in the church.

The program will consist of readings of John's poetry and blessings and selected excerpts from his various books.

Music will be provided by Gerry Dignan, a music minister from a vibrant city center church in Chicago. Gerry weaves various strands of World Music together... including Spanish, Celtic, African and Gospel songs to create a ritual of remembrance.

The evening concludes with a ceili in the courtyard (weather permitting) where guests will be invited to share stories of their connection to John and his work.

You are all very welcome! There is no charge for the evening's event.

This gathering in Chicago is one of several celebrations and remembrances of John spontaneously offered by loved ones around the world. John's family and business office are not directly involved in organizing or presenting this tribute.

Remembering John O'Donohue

Poet, priest and philosopher John O'Donohue died suddenly in January at the age of 52. A mesmerising public speaker and dazzling writer, John developed a global audience for his writings and his life has been celebrated on several continents.

Tonight's event, organised with his partner Kristine Fleck, will feature video and audio footage recorded in the final months of John's life, excerpts from his writings, tributes by those who knew him (in person and on the page) and a chance to quietly reflect. John lived much of his life at his remote home in Connemara, sceptical of what he called "the religion of rush". He wrote from personal experience that "if we trust our need for silence, stillness, and solitude, we will find where we need to go."

At a time when anxious ecclesiastical institutions draw ever clearer lines to exclude the doubtful, we will celebrate John's 'vision of the divine where no one or nothing is excluded'.

This is a celebration of the gifts, work, and life of Irish poet and philosopher, John O’Donohue, who passed away unexpectedly in January at the age of 52.
